Natural Homemade Dishwasher Detergent Tabs

     Natural Homemade Dish Detergent Tabs
Combine ingredients in a bowl, should be the consistency of sugar cookie dough so add juice or washing soda to get to right consistency.

Spoon mixture into ice cube trays and sit in the sun to dry.

Pop them out and put a tab in your detergent compartment of your dishwasher to wash your dishes.

This recipe I adapted from one that my friend April shared with me, it used Borax.  If you want to use that, replace the baking soda in the recipe for borax.

  1. Do you think I could use Castille Soap instead of Lemon juice? (I have a ton of the soap on hand), or would it be too much liquid for this?

    1. The acid in the lemon juice is essential for reacting with the soda, plus I think the soap might make it too sudsy?? I am not sure though. If you want a way to use the castille soap up perhaps you could make some of my dish soap. I like to use this not only for hand-washing dishes but for the sinks, counters and stove sometimes too!

  2. Just made and used these. Color me impressed! The lemon juice is definitely the key. Worked perfect and no water spots! Thank you so much!

  3. Jessica, the castille will leave a waxy film on all your dishes.

  4. So, I went to the store, found all the ingredients. Came home and started my creation using your recipe. I opened the Epson salt and it had a smell..like ben gay! Well, I didn't realize I had grabbed an Epson salt w/ essential oils added to it. LOL So, I guess I have "special" dishwasher tabs! HA HA!

  5. I will be making these this weekend but am wondering if you could give me an approximation of how much this recipe will create. Thanks in advance!

  6. I tried this recipe and my dishes were cloudy. I have tried many recipes but they all leave my dishes cloudy. I have extremely hard water. Do you have any suggestions ti get dishes not to be cloudy afterwards? I would really like to make dishwasher soap. I love making my own laundry soap.

    1. I would add about a 1/2 tsp of vinegar or lemon juice to the tab right before closing the dispenser and starting the load, it will start to fizz, but sometimes I do this because we have VERY hard water as well. I hope this helps :)
